When We Were Young

Please click on the link to read more about Kathryn Rowland's work with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Cambridge Music Festival later this year.

London Philharmonic Orchestra

As part of their Concert Links programme, Kathryn will be visiting a primary school in Southwark, London along with musicians from the London Philharmonic Orchestra, during March 2009. The workshops will be linked to a special concert that the children will go and see, and they will write their own new piece of music to perform at the end of the project.

First Steps into the Fens

This project is running from September 2008 until July 2009, and is the result of a successful funding application to Youth Music as well as partnership funds from Fenland Links and Rural Wisbech West Children's Centre. The project sees Kathryn Rowland leading music sessions in four pre-schools - Parson Drove, Leverington (Stepping Stones), Gorefield and Wisbech St Mary, as well as four parent and toddler groups in the same locations. The workshops happen continually during term time which allows the workshops to develop. Also, as part of the project there are trainee music leaders working alongside Kathryn, as well as the staff in each setting taking part in specialised development sessions where they can try out and develop new musical ideas, and learn more about links with the Early Years Foundation Stage.

In addition, Rural Wisbech West Children's Centre is funding sessions to happen in other pre-schools in the area, the first of which will be in January at Little Lambs Pre-School in Guyhirn.

Toddler Groups

During June and July 2008, Kathryn visited several toddler groups, including Foxton Little Foxes and Mothers of Pre-Schoolers (MOPs!) in Cambridge.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

During July 2008, Kathryn was working with musicians from the RPO at Clyde Children's Centre in Deptford, London. The project involved all 150 children in the centre and focussed on language development, and the use of songs and rhymes to enable this, as well as lots of other exciting musical activities including workshops outside!

Earlier this year Kathryn also led workshops at Canary Wharf Museum as part of the RPO's Community & Education programme.

Parson Drove Pre-School and Payne Primary School

From September 2007 to February 2008 Music to Grow worked with Parson Drove Pre-School and Payne Primary School Reception class on a creative project.  Kathryn Rowland, from Music to Grow to,  made regular visits to both groups to create new music about their favourite things.  At the Pre-School there was a performance of all the new music, and for the reception class a CD created with all their new music.  This project was made possible due to a successful bid by the pre-school to Cambridgeshire ACRE's Local Network Fund.

Little Monkeys Play Group

Music to Grow to visited Little Monkeys Play Group every month from September 2007 through to March 2008.  This was a continuation of a partnership between the two organisations.  Through the sessions Music to Grow to introduced music-making to the young ones, who ranged in age from birth to school age, through the use of traditional nursery rhymes, as well as new songs written especially for the age group.
